Singapore Pharmacy Council hopes to increase number of pharmacists By Vimita Mohandas | Posted: 26 May 2011 1912 hrs SINGAPORE: The Singapore Pharmacy Council said it hopes to increase the number of pharmacists by about 1000 over the next five years. This will then bring the number to some 3000 in all. There are currently 1962 pharmacists in Singapore. The council said while the number of registered pharmacists has been increasing over the years, this is not enough - as Singapore is seeing an increasing aging population and the rise of chronic problems. The role of pharmacists have also become more complex, as they now provide step-down care services and management of chronic diseases. Speaking at the council's pledge ceremony on Thursday evening, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Manpower, Hawazi Daipi, said: "It is no longer a case of simply ensuring the right drug finds its way to the right patient. "[A Pharmacist's] role now includes amongst others assessing what the medication needs of the patient are and finding ways to help them maximise the benefits and reduce the side effects of medication therapy, save costs and improve health outcomes." As such, there is a need for pharmacists to upgrade their skills and knowledge in order to meet the demands in the changing healthcare landscape.
